What Is Social Marketing?
At present Facebook states that it has around 350 million active members and that on any given day 50% of them will login. As many people visit YouTube each day as they do Google. How often do you hear Twitter mentioned on the news. These and many other sites have become part of everyday life, people visit them many times a day and feel very comfortable using them.  They also offer an excellent mechanism for companies to keep in touch with their customers, or to create a buzz around a new product launch.
A great example is the new apple iPad. No one even knew it really existed until Wednesday the 27th of January 2010, but between the 1st January 2010 and its launch 25,000 unique pieces on content had been posted on the internet about the impending apple product launch. The internet was buzzing with talk about this new product, so much so that traditional media outlets like television and newspaper felt they had to get in on the act and report about this.
The Facebook campaign to stop Simon Cowell from getting another Christmas number 1 is another great example of social marketing. Facebook was used to promote an alternative with such great effect that it went to number 1. That is the power of social marketing.
